Lesson 01: Hazrat Imam Zaid bin Ali (R.A)

Hazrat Imam Zaid bin Ali  was born in Madina in 76 Hijri to Hazrat Imam Zain al- Abideen  and is the grandson of Hazrat Imam Hussain. He holds a prominent position among the Ahl al-bayt. Among the sons of Hazrat Imam Zain al-Abideen he holds the second most important position after Hazrat Imam Baqar. He was a tall, beautiful, and dignified person. Only at the age of thirteen he became skilled in all Quranic knowledge and he became famous with the title of "Haleef al-Quran". Hazrat Imam Zaid Bin Ali travelled to Syria and Iraq to published and preach the religion of Islam. 



 



Hazrat Imam Zaid bin Ali  married the granddaughter of Hazrat Muhammad bin Hanfiyah  Syeda Rita . He gained most of the knowledge through his father Hazrat Imam Zain al-Abideen and his brother Hazrat Imam Baqar . He was only eighteen years old when his father Hazrat Imam Zain al-Abideen  died. After his death, he came under the supervision of his brother Hazrat Imam Baqar . 



Hazrat Imam Zaid bin Ali (R.A) was a central figure among the knowledgeable and learned scholars of Madina, and he was an expert in various Islamic sciences and arts. He had complete knowledge of recitation, Quranic sciences, beliefs, and Ilm Alkalam. The experts in the knowledge of principles of Hadith have counted him among the Tabe'en in narrating Hadith. Because among the Companions whom he visited included, Hazrat  Abu al-Tufail Amir bin Wasla of  who was among the last of the Companions of the Holy Prophet to die. 



 



Hazrat Imam Jafar Sadiq , his nephew, said about the scholarly status of the Hazrat Zaid bin Ali:



''I swear by Allah! Hazrat Zaid bin Ali , was the person amongst us who recited the Holy Quran the most, the most understanding of the religion of Allah, and the most merciful among us. By Allah, there is no one amongst us like him in this world and the hereafter. May Allah have mercy on uncle, he was a chief.'' 



 



Hazrat Imam-e-Azam Abu Hanifah benefited from the knowledge of Hazrat Zaid  for approximately two years and found him to be a jurist, scholar, quick-witted and an individual who provided clear explanations of issues. It was his knowledge and intellect that Imam Abu Dawood, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam al-Nisai and Imam Ibn Majah  have narrated blessed Hadiths from him. 



 



Hazrat Imam Hussain and the companions of the Holy Prophet made tireless efforts in 61 Hijri during the incident of Karbala for the establishment and protection of the religion of Islam. Hazrat Imam Zaid bin Ali  continued this mission with his untiring efforts and Imam Abu Hanifah supported him when he raised voice against oppression and tyranny during his time. He was such a beloved person from the family of Ahl-e-Bait Nabuwat that forty thousand people took oath on his hand. 



 



"Fiqh-e-Zaidiya" is famous because of him. 'Zaidiya Government was established in Yemen after his martyrdom. Many of his followers are present in Yemen. 



 



Hazrat Imam Zaid bin Ali  followed the footsteps of his forefathers by conveying the message of "i" and bravely faced every oppression and tyranny with courage and he gained eternal fame just like his grandfather Hazrat Imam Hussain.He invited the people to follow the Holy Quran and Sunnah, do Jihad against the cruel rulers and to help the needy. He was a great scholar of the Holy Quran and his all advises and suggestions were based on the teachings of the Holy Quran. He has a great number of students. He wrote numerous important books on different topics. 



Hazrat Imam Zaid  was filled with the spirit of unity of the Ummah. He used to say that By God! I pray that the stars of the night take my hands and my body falls from there and break into pieces and in return of that, Allah Almighty grant unity in Muhammadi Ummah. He was martyred in 122 Hijri at the age of forty-two (42) years in the same struggle to establish the Caliphate of Islam. His mausoleum is located at Raba, twenty-two (22) kilometres north of Mota, the famous highway connecting Hijaz and Syria. 



 



In this present age, there is a dire need for us to adopt the life style and deeds of Hazrat Imam Zaid bin Ali , his attributes of knowledge, knowledge of religion, worship and discipline. We should seek guidance from various aspects of his religious and social life and adopt it in every field of practical life, so that by removing our moral and practical weaknesses by following his character traits, we will gain the love of Allah and His messenger and become a successful person.
